Under a board reading SUFFOLK, three men lean on the gate of a pen in the sheep lines of an agricultural show, one hauling himself up on the bottom rail for a better look, another with the show catalogue rolled in his hand. The open-sided timber sheds, five-rail hurdles, and deep straw bedding are the standard fabric of a British showground; beyond them, exhibitors' caravans and a coach are parked among the trees. By the 1960s the Suffolk, bred in East Anglia from Norfolk Horn and Southdown stock, was Britain's dominant terminal sire and filled some of the largest classes on the schedule. Project: 219970
