Handlers in the traditional white stockman's coat present a class of longwool sheep for judging in the main ring of a British agricultural show. The animals' fleeces hang in long corkscrew ringlets that hide the body entirely — the hallmark of the English longwool breeds such as the Lincoln and Leicester Longwool, once the foundation of the country's lustre-wool trade and by the 1970s reduced largely to the show ring. Beyond the white rails lie the fixtures of the showground: marquee, secretary's hut, a flagpole flying the Union Flag, and long lines of touring caravans.
