A young handler sets up a Suffolk ram lamb for inspection at an agricultural show, one hand under the jaw to lift the head, the other flat on the loin to level the back — the standard posture for presenting a sheep to a judge. The breed's bare black head and legs and dense white fleece, here trimmed and carded to a show finish, made the Suffolk Britain's dominant terminal sire by the mid-twentieth century.
