Known throughout Southeast Asia as the 'Spad', the piston-engined Skyraider served the U.S. Air Force as an attack aircraft and, in the 'Sandy' role, as escort for combat search and rescue helicopters recovering downed aircrew — a mission that required the long loiter time and heavy ordnance load this aircraft's laden pylons suggest.
