A Douglas A-1 Skyraider crosses the last of the light on the way home, external tanks and ordnance still visible beneath its wings. Photographed from an accompanying aircraft, the silhouette shows the tall fin, straight wings, and bubble canopy of the type that Vietnam-era crews called the "Spad." Its ability to carry an enormous load and loiter for hours made it indispensable for close air support and for escorting rescue helicopters, and long sorties like this one often ended in exactly this light.
