Cessna O-2A Skymaster Forward Air Control Aircraft USAF 10973 in Flight, Vietnam War Era
A Cessna O-2A Skymaster, tail number 10973, over Southeast Asia. Flying as Forward Air Controllers, O-2 crews orbited low over the battlefield for hours to find targets, mark them with white phosphorus rockets, and direct strike aircraft onto them. They worked hand in hand with the A-1 Skyraider: it was usually a FAC who located a downed airman and then controlled the Sandy escorts and rescue helicopters in to bring him out. Project: 219827
