An F-4 Phantom II, sharkmouth painted on its radome, manoeuvres with undercarriage extended over Southeast Asia. The Phantom was the USAF's principal tactical fighter of the Vietnam War, flying air superiority, strike and escort missions. The dark plume behind it comes from its two J79 engines, whose heavy smoke trail was a well-known tactical drawback - visible to enemy observers and fighters long before the aircraft itself could be identified.
