The Distinguished Flying Cross citation honors First Lieutenant Larry L. Cavender for extraordinary heroism near Ben Het, South Vietnam, on 27 February 1970. Leading a flight of two A-1H Skyraiders, he made repeated low-level passes under heavy fire to protect a besieged reconnaissance team after two rescue helicopters had already been downed.
