Ie Shima in 1945 is seen from the flight line of the 345th Bombardment Group's B-25 Mitchells to the perimeter gun crews, artillery training with the 75mm Pack Howitzer, and the rows of white crosses in the island's temporary military cemetery. A handwritten note reading "This is where Pyle is buried" marks the resting place of war correspondent Ernie Pyle, killed on the island that April.
