Local women and a young girl work a field on Ie Shima, a small island off Okinawa, using traditional hand hoes to cultivate sweet potatoes. Captured by American forces in April 1945, Ie Shima became home to an airfield used by the 345th Bombardment Group ('Air Apaches') flying B-25 Mitchell bombers during the closing months of the Pacific War.
