American Military Cemetery, Ie Shima, 1945
This photograph shows the temporary American military cemetery established on Ie Shima following the island's capture during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. Rows of simple wooden crosses mark the graves of servicemen who fell during the fighting for Ie Shima and the broader Okinawa campaign. The island is perhaps best known as the site where famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed in April 1945 and initially laid to rest among the troops he had covered throughout the war.
