Topic: Observing the explosion of Stinger 41 and tracking bailing crew members
Tom Wasco: “…After I’d been airborne for about an hour, all of a sudden I see this bright explosion to my east, and I look, I immediately saw the AC119K get hit and the right wing caught on fire, debris every place, and nothing but a big plume of smoke and fire coming out of the right side of the airplane. And I knew the airplane was doomed at that point…
The incredible heroism of these men that day is something that I’ll always remember… The co-pilot was the last one out of the airplane. Bailed out so low that his parachute just barely opened before he hit the trees, and, but he was rescued.”
In this episode, retired Lieutenant General Tom Wasco provides a eyewitness perspective as a Forward Air Controller (Sun Dog 40) during the Battle of An Lộc in May 1972. Wasco details the tragic yet extraordinarily heroic mission of Stinger 41, an AC119K gunship assigned to a daytime strike over one of the most heavily defended areas in South Vietnam.
When Stinger 41 was hit by anti aircraft fire, aircraft commander Captain Terrence Courtney and his crew sacrificed everything to keep the aircraft level so seven crew members could bail out. Wasco describes the intense search and rescue (SAR) operation that saved all seven survivors before nightfall, the tactical ingenuity of fellow FAC Tom Milligan, and the ongoing four year fight to secure proper military recognition for the brave crew members whose award packages were lost to bureaucratic drawdown.
