Topic: Taking anti aircraft fire over Charlie Firebase and executing a gear up forced landing
Sun Fam: “…The anti aircraft machine gun just waiting for me and they hit me when I coming in. My engine is cough. They go backfire and boom… I pull all the way up from the treetop. I remember I pulled up is about 3,000 feet…
I look, I see that door, unprepared surface for helicopter landing… I put the gear down. The gear does not come down because hydraulic system gets shut down… So I say, what the heck, I’m crash, barely landing.
I slip the aircraft… they drop like a rock. The A1 dropped like a rock… Boom! The red soy dust come on over my aircraft. And I’m like a rodeo riding on the runway. And the aircraft suddenly stopped… You know what I saw right in front of me? Not more than 20 feet. The concertina wires at the end of the landing strip with the skull and crossbones say: ‘Do not cross, landmine.’“

He concludes with thoughtful personal reflections on leadership, military service, building a life in the United States, and the enduring contributions of the Vietnamese diaspora.
