Lying flat on the sand, the photographer aimed his camera out over his own bare feet and recorded this grove of casuarina — the needle-leaved 'Australian pine' planted across the tropics to hold coastal dunes. Nearly every trunk has been whitewashed to shoulder height, a practice that protected the bark but on military installations served mainly to mark edges and paths and to enforce good order. A hut roof shows through the trees at right. Associated with the collection's Vietnam-era material, the frame documents not an operation but an afternoon entirely off duty. Project: 219970
