Two Ordnance-Laden Douglas A-1 Skyraiders Taxiing, Viewed from Astern — Vietnam War Flight Line

Two Douglas A-1 Skyraiders taxi out under full ordnance loads, photographed from behind on a Southeast Asian flight line during the Vietnam War. Rows of finned stores line both wings of each aircraft, with larger tanks or dispensers inboard — a bomb load rivalling that of a Second World War heavy bomber, carried by a single piston-engine attack aircraft. Combined with an endurance measured in hours, that capacity is what made the Skyraider the aircraft ground teams asked for by name, whether supporting cross-border reconnaissance or escorting rescue helicopters in the 'Sandy' role.
