A seven-man reconnaissance team photographed at a forward launch site during the Vietnam War, a parked helicopter behind them. Their olive fatigues carry no rank, name tapes or unit insignia - the sterile appearance required of personnel of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG), who ran covert reconnaissance across the borders into Laos and Cambodia. Headbands, watch caps and boonie hats replace regulation headgear; the men carry compact CAR-15 carbines, chest-mounted pouches, extraction-harness webbing and a coil of rappelling rope, and the soldier at centre is an indigenous team member, most likely Montagnard or Nung.
