Man in Aloha Shirt Beside a Mercury Cougar at a Coastal Overlook, Probably Diamond Head Road, Oahu, Hawaii, circa 1970 to 1972
A traveler poses beside a maroon Mercury Cougar at a coastal pull-off above a reef break, almost certainly on Diamond Head Road, Oahu. The car's slatted full-width taillight panel and quarter-panel script date it to about the 1969 to 1970 model years, and its yellow Hawaii plate reads 2A-72 with the final digit obscured. The subject's blue-and-white tapa-print aloha shirt, flared white trousers and aviator sunglasses place the exposure at roughly 1970 to 1972. Filed with Vietnam-era aviation material, the frame is one of a run of civilian travel slides from a single Hawaiian trip. Hawaii served as the principal leave and transit point for American personnel moving to and from Southeast Asia throughout this period. Project: 219827
