Sunset on Waikiki Beach with High-Rise Hotel Construction, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, circa Late 1960s to Early 1970s

Sunset over Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, with surfers and swimmers on the reef break and beachgoers on the sand and seawall. At right, a cluster of hotel towers rises against the glare, one still unfinished and served by a tower crane — the signature of the Waikiki building boom that replaced the beachfront's low-rise resorts with high-rise hotels between the mid-1960s and early 1970s. Filed with Vietnam-era aviation material, this is in fact a civilian travel photograph from the same Hawaiian trip as other slides in the sequence. Hawaii was the principal leave and transit point for American personnel moving to and from Southeast Asia during these years. The strongly backlit exposure has reduced all foreground figures to silhouettes. No text is legible. Project: 219827
