Not all frames in a military slide collection record military service. This mid-to-late 1960s color transparency shows a man in civilian clothes on a lava-rock walkway above a tropical bay, almost certainly on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii. The black volcanic stone walls, white lattice screens and stepped terraces are hallmarks of mid-century Hawaiian resort design. Hawaii served as a principal leave and transit point for American personnel travelling to and from Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, and vacation or R&R images such as this one are frequently interleaved with service photographs in veterans' slide files.
