The Don Englebreston Collection
Tropical Beach and Resort Under Construction, Viewed from a Hotel Balcony, Late 1960s or Early 1970s
Filed among Vietnam War aviation material, this photograph shows something entirely different: a tropical beach seen from a hotel balcony, with a reinforced-concrete resort tower rising under a lattice crane at left and an outrigger drawn up in turquoise shallows beyond. The reef break, coconut palms and building boom are consistent with Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, the principal rest and recuperation destination for American servicemen during the war. Images like this one routinely appear in veterans' collections, marking the sharp contrast between a week of leave and a combat tour. Project: 219827
