In the foreground, two black muzzles protrude from the wing leading edge, the barrels of the Skyraider's 20mm cannon, and three banded stores hang from the underwing pylons. The A-1 carried a heavier and more varied load than the jets of its generation and could stay over a target for hours, which made it the aircraft of choice for close air support and for escorting rescue helicopters to downed aircrew.
