Douglas A-1 Skyraider Wingman Photographed from the Cockpit over a Vietnamese Base Complex, Vietnam War Era
Photographed from the cockpit of one Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a second flies off the wing above a sprawling Vietnamese base complex. In the foreground, two black muzzles protrude from the wing leading edge, the barrels of the Skyraider's 20mm cannon, and three banded stores hang from the underwing pylons. The A-1 carried a heavier and more varied load than the jets of its generation and could stay over a target for hours, which made it the aircraft of choice for close air support and for escorting rescue helicopters to downed aircrew.
