Douglas A-1 Skyraider in Silhouette over a Coastal Plain at Sunset, Southeast Asia, Vietnam War Era
A Douglas A-1 Skyraider runs low along a Southeast Asian coastline at last light, photographed from a trailing aircraft. The silhouette shows the type's deep fuselage, long straight wing, tall fin, and forward-set bubble canopy of the single-seat A-1H/J, with external tanks slung beneath the wings and navigation lights already burning. Beyond the aircraft, mountains fall to the sea, a barrier beach encloses a lagoon, and a river winds across the coastal plain. Slow, heavily armed, and capable of loitering for hours, the Skyraider flew close air support and "Sandy" rescue-escort missions long after jets had replaced piston aircraft elsewhere. Project: 219827
