Photographed over the wing of a camouflaged Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a remote airstrip cuts a pale line through red laterite earth in the forested highlands. The wing carries the US national star-and-bar insignia and a rack of long white cylindrical stores - most consistent with parachute flares or marker rounds, the tools of night close air support and of the "Sandy" rescue mission. Airfields like this served isolated Special Forces camps and border outposts, and the Skyraiders that orbited above them were often the only firepower within reach.
