SPAD was the aircrew's nickname for the Skyraider itself - a jibe at flying a piston-engined machine in the jet age. SANDY was the callsign of the A-1s that escorted rescue helicopters in to recover downed airmen. FIREFLY was the callsign for their night sorties against traffic on the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
