Wilmington Morning Star Article, 'Wilmington Veteran Denies Nerve Gas Used on Deserters,' 1998

This 1998 Wilmington Morning Star article documents the public controversy following a June 1998 CNN and Time report alleging that U.S. Special Forces used the nerve agent sarin during the 1970 Operation Tailwind. The operation's commander, retired Lt. Col. Eugene McCarley, publicly denied the allegations. Within weeks, CNN and Time retracted the story after an internal review found the evidence did not support its claims. This clipping is preserved in the Gene McCarley Collection as a record of that historical media controversy. Project: 219472
