A Douglas A-1 Skyraider passes overhead in shallow bank, silhouetted against flat overcast, at an air show on 7 June 2014. Seen from directly below, the aircraft is unmistakable: the long straight wing is lined with a comb of external stores pylons - the Skyraider carried fifteen hardpoints, an extraordinary number for a single-engine aircraft, and could lift an ordnance load heavier than a Second World War heavy bomber.
