Douglas A-1 Skyraider 'LIEUTENANT AMERICA' Starting Engine with Wings Folded, Jim Wold Day, 2 May 2015
Jim Wold Day, 2 May 2015. The preserved Douglas A-1 Skyraider 'Lieutenant America' lights its Wright R-3350 radial, wings still folded in the naval stowed position the type inherited from its carrier origins. Painted in Southeast Asia camouflage and hung with external tanks and pylons, the aircraft represents the Spads flown by USAF special operations squadrons in Vietnam, where their endurance and heavy load made them the escorts of choice for combat rescue. The event honored A-1 community veteran Jim Wold. From the collection of Donald L. Engebretsen. Project: 219298
