This photograph captures the aftermath of enemy ground fire on a Douglas A-1 Skyraider, the propeller-driven attack aircraft flown extensively by U.S. Air Force Air Commando and Special Operations squadrons during the Vietnam War. Rugged and able to absorb tremendous punishment, the A-1 earned a reputation for bringing pilots home despite severe damage like that seen here in the outer wing panel. Skyraiders flew low-altitude close air support and search-and-rescue escort ("Sandy") missions over some of the most heavily defended airspace in Southeast Asia. Project: 219047
