This plaque accompanies a granite replica of the headstone used by North Vietnamese forces to mark Captain Lance P. Sijan's grave near the "Hanoi Hilton" POW camp in January 1968. In an extraordinary gesture, the original headstone was returned along with his remains in 1974, later donated to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where it remains today as a testament to the respect Sijan's courage earned even from his captors.
