A U.S. Air Force A-1 Skyraider banks through towering cumulus clouds during the Vietnam War. Nicknamed the "Spad" for its propeller-driven, WWII-style design, the Skyraider remained in frontline service into the jet age because of its unmatched loiter time, heavy weapons payload, and ability to absorb battle damage. Air Commando and Special Operations squadrons flew the A-1 on close air support and search-and-rescue escort (RESCORT) missions, often under the radio call sign "Sandy," protecting downed airmen deep in hostile territory.
