Circa 1970, Southeast Asia. A Douglas A-1 Skyraider banks away above a towering cumulus build-up, photographed from the cockpit of its wingman. The image comes from the personal slides of 1Lt Donald L. Engebretsen and is filed under the names of Engebretsen and 1Lt A. Jackson 'Jax' Roberts, both listed on the June 1970 roster of Operating Location Alpha Alpha, the 56th Special Operations Wing's Skyraider detachment at Da Nang. OLAA flew Sandy rescue escort and close air support for MACV-SOG reconnaissance teams, and nearly half of its missions were flown in support of SOG. Views like this one, taken between the target and home, are among the few surviving records of the war as its pilots actually saw it. Project: 218967
