Douglas A-1 Skyraider in Flight Among Towering Cumulus, Air-to-Air from Wingman's Cockpit, ca. June 1970
An A-1 Skyraider in flight over Southeast Asia, photographed from a wingman's cockpit, ca. June 1970. Carrying external stores and threading the monsoon-season cumulus buildups that shaped every mission in the theater, this is the Skyraider in its element: slow, heavy, long-legged, and flown in loose visual formation. The photographer, Lt. Donald L. Engebretsen, flew A-1s with Operating Location Alpha Alpha of the 56th Special Operations Wing at Da Nang, a detachment whose work included close air support, 'Sandy' combat search and rescue escort, and support of MACV-SOG reconnaissance teams. The blurred edge of his own aircraft is visible at the lower right corner of the frame. Project: 218964
