Preserved Douglas A-1 Skyraider "Lieutenant" with Visitor Inspecting Wing and Gun Bay, Reunion Event
A restored Douglas A-1 Skyraider, nicknamed the "Spad" by the aircrews who flew it, sits on display at a veterans' reunion event. Prized for its heavy ordnance capacity and long loiter time, the A-1 served with distinction in the close-air-support and combat search-and-rescue ("Sandy") roles during the Vietnam War. This aircraft carries hand-painted nose art reading "LIEUTENANT" alongside an American flag motif. A visitor examines the aircraft's wing-mounted armament bay, a reminder of the rugged firepower that made the Skyraider a favorite of ground troops it supported. Project: 218866
