The aircraft, apparently a North American T-28 Trojan wearing faded Southeast Asia camouflage and the nose art LIEUTENANT AMERICA, represents a class of piston-engined aircraft that served in the counter-insurgency and forward air control roles in Vietnam and Laos alongside the Douglas A-1 Skyraider. Photographs like this one, from the reunion files of Skyraider pilot Donald L.
