Wayne Benjamin Wolfkeil, whose A-1H Skyraider struck a Laotian mountainside on 9 August 1968. Declared Missing in Action, the 36-year-old father of four was not reclassified as Killed in Action until 1979 — eleven years his widow spent seeking proof he was alive. The accompanying squadron photograph shows Wolfkeil at left, cigar in his teeth, among fellow airmen on the flight line. Nearly 2,000 Americans remain unaccounted for from the Vietnam War.
