Handwritten Caption Card Identifying USS Missouri and USS South Dakota, WWII Pacific Fleet Album
This annotation card, penned by a U.S. Navy veteran in his personal wartime photo album, identifies a companion snapshot of Navy aircraft flying over the battleships USS South Dakota (BB-57) and USS Missouri (BB-63). Both vessels served together in the Pacific fast carrier task forces during 1944-45, providing anti-aircraft protection for carrier strikes across the Philippines, Formosa, and Japanese Home Islands campaigns. USS Missouri would later host the formal Japanese surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945. Project: 218722
