This badly faded snapshot, taken from a ship in Leyte Gulf, Philippines, appears to record aircraft or anti-aircraft fire in the sky above the fleet anchorage. During the 1944-45 Leyte campaign, Allied shipping in the gulf came under repeated Japanese air attack, including some of the war's first kamikaze strikes, prompting sailors to document these dramatic moments with hand-held cameras despite difficult shooting conditions.
