The Snapshots in Time Collection
Photograph Album Page, U.S. Navy Sailor's European Liberty Tour: Tower Bridge, Parliament, and the Thames, London, 1939 (Frames 246-256)
A page from a 1939 travel scrapbook believed kept by a crewman of the light cruiser USS Trenton, capturing an American sailor's tour along the River Thames in London. The snapshots show the raised bascules and towers of Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, and a candid moment of the sailor -- nicknamed 'Pauley' -- posing with a group of local children he affectionately dubbed the 'Deadend Kids of London.' Taken on the eve of the Second World War, these images preserve a personal, human-scale record of American naval visits to Britain during a period of uneasy peace. Project: 218720
