Verso/Caption Sheet: Fourth Army Maneuvers Training at Camp Merriam, San Luis Obispo, August 1937
This 1937 caption sheet documents hard training for the Fourth Army maneuvers at Camp Merriam near San Luis Obispo, California, where 56,000 National Guardsmen, regulars, and reservists from California, Utah, and Nevada prepared to engage in mock combat against the Regular Army's Sixth Brigade. The companion photograph shows men of F Company, Pomona, California, drilling under Sergeant M. E. Nichols -- a snapshot of the large-scale training that helped ready American forces in the years before World War II. Project: 218639
