This aerial photograph shows a field of wrecked Japanese fighter aircraft at the end of the Wewak airstrip in New Guinea, the result of devastating Allied air raids in August 1943. Fifth Air Force units, including the 312th Bomb Group, struck Wewak's airfields in a coordinated attack that destroyed dozens of Japanese aircraft on the ground, crippling enemy air operations in the region for months to come.
