The Snapshots in Time Collection
Album Page: 'Wewak' - Bombing Strike Photo with Handwritten Technical Caption
This annotated scrapbook page from a 312th Bomb Group veteran documents a low-level bombing run over the Wewak airfield complex in New Guinea. The handwritten note explains that a small 250-pound bomb, equipped with a delayed fuse to allow the attacking aircraft to escape the blast radius, struck the ground near a parked Japanese 'Betty' bomber and bounced rather than exploding on impact. Such firsthand technical annotations offer valuable insight into the tactics and ordnance used during Fifth Air Force strikes on Japanese airfields in 1943. Project: 218561
