This wartime snapshot, preserved in a personal album from the 312th Bombardment Group, captures bursts of Japanese anti-aircraft fire lighting a darkened Pacific sky. The 312th, part of the Fifth Air Force, flew A-20 Havoc and A-26 Invader attack bombers on low-level strikes against enemy shipping, airfields, and ground positions throughout New Guinea and the Philippines, often penetrating heavily defended airspace where such flak barrages were a constant hazard to aircrews.
