Parafrag Bombing Attack on Japanese Airfield with Aircraft Destroyed on Ground
This strike-camera photograph documents a low-altitude parafrag bombing attack on a Japanese airfield or dispersal area. Dozens of small parachutes from fragmentation bombs are visible scattered across the fields below, while a Japanese aircraft burns on the ground at left, likely destroyed earlier in the same strafing run. Missions of this kind, flown by 312th Bomb Group B-25 Mitchells at treetop height, were instrumental in destroying enemy air power on the ground throughout the Southwest Pacific campaign.
