312th Bomb Group Strike Photograph with Parafrag Bomb in Descent — Echague, Isabela, Luzon, 4 May 1945
This 388th Bombardment Squadron strike photograph, taken over Echague, Isabela province, on 4 May 1945, captures a rare and dramatic detail: a parachute-retarded fragmentation bomb descending toward the target village, its canopy deployed to slow its fall and protect the low-flying attacking aircraft from blast fragments. Parafrag bombs were widely used by Fifth Air Force B-25 Mitchells during low-altitude strikes on Japanese positions in populated areas of Luzon during the final months of the Philippines campaign.
