Strike Photograph: 388th Bomb Squadron Parafrag Attack on Pattao, Philippines, 13 April 1945

An official strike-camera photograph, preserved in a personal scrapbook, captures parachute-retarded fragmentation bombs ('parafrags') falling from 388th Bomb Squadron, 312th Bomb Group aircraft over Pattao, Philippines, at 10:15 AM on 13 April 1945. Parafrag bombs allowed low-flying attack planes to strike ground targets with fragmentation bombs while parachutes slowed the bombs' fall, giving the attacking aircraft time to clear the blast radius - a hallmark tactic of Fifth Air Force attack groups in the Pacific.
