Fighter Aircraft Overturned on Flight Deck of U.S.S. Petrof Bay (CVE-80) During Landing Mishap, April 16, 1945

A fighter aircraft lies flipped on its back after a landing mishap on the flight deck of the escort carrier U.S.S. Petrof Bay (CVE-80) in April 1945, while in the distance another aircraft appears to go down into the sea. Deck accidents were a constant hazard of carrier aviation during World War II, when pilots landed high-performance aircraft on short, pitching flight decks, often under combat conditions.
