Gallery: Part 2
Taken from the flight deck of USS Petrof Bay, these photographs show USS Suwannee burning after a kamikaze crash-dive on 26 October 1944, in the opening wave of coordinated suicide attacks following the Battle off Samar. Flight deck accidents from 1945 and the confidential Bureau of Aeronautics caption cards that accompanied each print document both the hazards of carrier aviation and the Navy's wartime control of its own imagery.
