Ruins of the Manila Central Post Office and Pasig River Waterfront, Philippines, 1945
The bombed and burned-out shell of the Manila Central Post Office stands along the Pasig River in this 1945 photograph, one of countless landmarks devastated during the Battle of Manila. The month-long urban battle between American/Filipino forces and entrenched Japanese troops left much of the historic city in ruins and claimed tens of thousands of civilian lives. Project: 218478
