A Bell P-39 Airacobra cruises in level flight, its engine mounted mid-fuselage behind the pilot and its 37mm cannon firing through the propeller hub. Though limited in high-altitude performance, the P-39 excelled at low altitude and was supplied in massive numbers to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease, where it became one of the most successful Allied fighters on the Eastern Front.
