Bomb Casing Recovery, Roseville Yard Explosion Aftermath, Roseville, California, 1973
This 1973 photograph documents cleanup operations following the catastrophic explosion and fire at the Southern Pacific Railroad's Roseville Yard in Roseville, California, on April 28, 1973. A train carrying bombs and munitions destined for use in the Vietnam War caught fire and detonated in a series of explosions, destroying much of the rail yard and damaging surrounding neighborhoods. Here, a front-end loader gathers recovered bomb casings from the wreckage as part of the extensive ordnance recovery and site remediation effort that followed one of the largest domestic munitions accidents of the Vietnam War era.
